Sadako Calcagno

Image
Image
Sadako is a storyteller of history. She is 91 years old and experienced World War II in Tokyo. She was born in Nihonbashi, an area at the heart of Tokyo, Japan. She traveled to the US in 1963 and it is in NY where she met her husband and eventually moved to New Jersey. When Sadako was only a child, her parents made an arrangement for her to run a local O-chaya, a tea house that is a very expensive restaurant with Geishas. However, she decided at an early age that she wanted to experience the world outside of Japan. She became a tour guide to make connections with foreigners and practice her English. She was determined to go to the US in order to study physical therapy and become the first physical therapist in Japan. She has much to share about her life here in the US and there in Japan. For example, she was one of the first women to get a driver’s license in Japan. You can learn about this extraordinary Japanese lady’s life in the interview video done by the Animazement Media Team. She will be at the Japan American Society North Carolina table in Culture Alley. Please go and say hi to her!
